NEW CANTON, Ill. -- A Missouri man was arrested Friday in Pike County on charges of failure to register as a sex offender.

The Pike County Sheriff's Department said an investigation was launched after the department received information that a child sex offender was unlawfully staying at a residence in New Canton and that the offender allegedly attended a local school function recently.

Deputies subsequently arrested Charles G. Buecker, 31, of Wright City, Mo., at a residence in the 200 block of Elm Street in New Canton. He was charged with failure to register as a sex offender; false information provided by a sex offender; obstructing justice; and sex offender present in a school.

Authorities say the obstruction of justice charge stemmed from Buecker allegedly providing a wrong name to investigating officers.

The sheriff's department said Buecker is on parole with the Missouri Department of Corrections and is facing a pending charge of failure to register as a sex offender in Warren County, Mo.

Buecker was taken to the Pike County Jail.
