Former Hancock County jailer charged with sexual misconduct with an inmate

CARTHAGE, Ill. -- A former Hancock County Jail employee is now behind bars after being charged with custodial sexual misconduct, a class 3 felony, Hancock County Sheriff Scott Bentzinger has reported.

Cory D. Hamelton, 35, was arrested Friday, Oct. 11, by the Illinois State Police. At Bentzinger's request, the ISP conducted the investigation into the alleged misconduct, which reportedly involved a female inmate.

Bentzinger said Hamelton had worked at the jail for more than two years. His employment was terminated Friday.

Hamleton's bail has been set at $100,000. He remains in the custody of the McDonough County Jail in Macomb. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 24.
