To The Herald-Whig:
Is this world nothing more than an ever-changing kaleidoscope of ugly manipulated data?
Facts are hard, and few of us want to digest the whole truth. Let's look at guns and drinking while driving. About 10,000 people die each year because of homicide or accidental shootings. There are also over 10,000 deaths each year because of drinking and driving. There are slightly more children who die because of these auto accidents than because of guns. That's not mentioning statistics concerning paralysis and brain injury that reveal that drinking and driving is a far more hideous American issue than gun violence. Yet, I don't see a bill being argued about in Congress concerning stopping the sale of alcohol after 8 p.m. each night to make our society safe. Why not?
I used to like politics. I viewed it as a game of chess among friends. Now, is there any honor?
Look at the past decade, and very little truth can be seen. Here is a list of facts that people should think about:
º Barack Obama won a blow-out 2012 election by 4 percentage points. He won Illinois by only winning 23% of its counties.
º Hillary Clinton won Illinois by only winning 12 of the 102 counties in 2016.
º Three 2016 Electoral College votes were given to Colin Powell as protest votes, yet the national news media never talked about this detail.
º Over the past 120 years, poverty in the U.S. has continued to decline, while the news media covers it more often.
º Thirty-three % of all Americans are obese, with 20% of all school-aged children, while 12% of the 128 million American households are food insecure.
º Marijuana-related car accidents are increasing, with 14% of them having children in the automobile.
º Heroin addiction is increasing as Mexican drug lords are switching from exporting pot to this narcotic.
º India is recognized as having nine of the 10 most polluted cities in the world. The rest of the top 20 most polluted are in Asia and Africa.
º Global warming is happening mostly because of a worldwide overpopulation. In recent decades, the planet has added a billion people every 10 years as recycling has done little to help the environment.
It seems that the real America is different than what we are told and that we soak up, like sponges, from politicians and the media.
