QUINCY -- Students in pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade can have a blast while building math skills.

Math Blast 2019 kicks off this week at Quincy's Hy-Vee stores.

The five-week challenge -- offered Monday through Sunday of each week -- gives students two or three real-life match challenges

Students, with an adult, go to either store by Sunday, Oct. 13 to complete the first week's two or three real-life math challenges, then return each week for new challenges.

Students who complete all five weeks of Math Blast get a free major attraction at Scottie's Fun Spot and are eligible for a drawing for a tablet, Kindle Fire or $25 gift card. Students who participate at least one week are eligible for a drawing for a Hy-Vee pizza and drink.

The math challenge papers, specific to grade levels, are available near Customer Service at each store.

"We use mathematical concepts and the skills we learn from doing math problems every day," Regional Superintendent of Schools Jill Reis said. "The analytical and reasoning skills we learn through math helps us solve problems and look for solutions."

Math Blast is an initiative of Regional Office of Education No. 1 with sponsorship from Hy-Vee and Refreshment Services Pepsi.
