Prep baseball roundup: Hedrick, Eagles finish with flurry

Ryan Hedrick gave the Liberty baseball team the lead. He then made sure Brown County didn't take it away.

Hedrick's run-scoring triple with one out in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday put the Eagles ahead 6-5. In the bottom of the inning, Hedrick worked around a one-out single, retiring the final batter on a comebacker to preserve Liberty's victory in the regular season finale in Mount Sterling, Ill.

Gabe Blakely hit an RBI single in the first to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Hedrick's sacrifice groundout tied the game at 1 in the fifth, but Brown County had an RBI groundout from Lanny Sussenbach and RBI singles from Mason Henry and Bain Woodward to push its lead to 4-1. An RBI double by Logan Robbins followed by a two-run double by Kutter Thompson tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth. Chance Fuqua hit an RBI single in the sixth, but Robbins answered with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 5.

Hedrick pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, holding the Hornets to two hits. Karson Kasparie and Thompson had three hits apiece for Liberty (12-11). Nathan Hendricker and Sussenbach each had a pair of hits for Brown County (13-12-1).

Quincy Notre Dame 2, Macomb 1: Griffin Kirn won a pitcher's duel at Phil Bradley Field in Macomb. The junior left-hander allowed one run and four hits while striking out eight.

Brexton Beard had a groundout that scored Tommy Ray to gave QND a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Macomb answered with its only run in the second off an RBI single by Jackson Mabrey. Nick Schwartz scored the Raiders' winning run on a passed ball in the fourth. Schwartz drew a walk to lead off the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball prior to scoring.

Macomb's Ben Higgins pitched a complete game, allowing two runs and four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Dylan Foley had three of the Raiders' four hits.

La Plata 9, Canton 3: Canton held a 3-0 lead, but gave up nine runs in the final three innings and lost in the Class 1 District 3 championship game in La Plata, Mo.

Canton took a 1-0 lead off Mason Wright's RBI double in the first and added a sacrifice bunt by Brody Smith and an RBI double by Mason Fryer in the third. La Plata tied the game in the fourth off three two-out singles and a walk, and tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth, and four runs in the sixth. All but one player in the lineup had a hit for Canton (13-5). The Tigers scored three runs off eight hits and left eight runners on.
