Illinois prep baseball roundup: Raiders walk way to mercy-rule ending

The Quincy Notre Dame baseball team took advantage of everything it was given Tuesday night.

The Raiders collected 11 hits and drew 11 walks, turning them into a 12-run lead through three innings and settling for a 16-5 five-inning victory in Kahoka, Mo.

Dylan Foley and Ben Whittaker each belted a three-run home run as part of a seven-run third inning that extended the Raiders' lead to 12-0. Run-scoring singles by Ike Wiley, Brexton Beard and Chase Miles in the fifth secured the mercy-rule ending for QND (17-3). Whittaker went 3 for 3 with four RBIs, while Wiley and Beard had two hits apiece. Foley walked twice and scored three runs.

Kirksville 9, Quincy High School 4: The Tigers scored six runs in the top of the seventh to steal a victory at the QHS field.

The Blue Devils led 4-2 before two walks led to a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to pull the Tigers within one run. In the seventh, a walk and a double forced QHS coach Brandon Crisp to pull starter Donovan Prost for Nick Cory.

He was greeted by a single to tie the game before everything unraveled. A hit batter with the bases loaded forced in a run, and Gillespie smashed a grand slam to left field with two outs to make it a five-run advantage.

Noah Harbin reached on an error leading off the bottom of the seventh for QHS, but three consecutive groundouts ended the game. The Blue Devils left seven runners on base overall. Kade Zanger went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored for QHS (6-13), while Prost was 2 for 4. He suffered the loss, allowing five runs and nine hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked five.

Brown County 5, Winchester West Central 2: After rallying from a two-run deficit in the sixth inning to tie the game, the Hornets won the game in the eighth be capitalizing on the Cougars' mistakes.

An RBI single by Chance Fuqua gave the Hornets the lead in the eighth, and they added runs on a catcher's error and a passed ball. In the sixth, an RBI single by Gabe Blakeley and an error on the Cougars third baseman plated the two tying runs.

Blakeley went 3 for 4 and was the winning pitcher, tossing seven innings with 10 strikeouts and just five hits allowed. Nathan Hendricerk worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth for the save.

Liberty 14, Pittsfield 4: The Eagles used a seven-run seventh inning to put the game away in Pittsfield.

Cole Hanlin oitched five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits to earn the victory for Liberty. Logan Robbins was 3 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs as Liberty (5-6) piled up 13 hits. Kutter Thompson also went 3 for 5 with an RBI, and he tossed two innings of hitless relief. Isaac Shaw was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Pittsfield (7-9).

Western/Griggsville-Perry 8, Payson Seymour 5: Western used a three-run sixth-inning to post a victory at Payson. After Indians (3-8) tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wildcats got an RBI double from Jadon Bryant and a two-run single by Tate Kunzeman in the top of the sixth.

Tanner Campbell pitched 5 1/3 innings for Western (4-11), allowing two runs on six hits, and Brady Hieland threw five innings and gave up five runs on seven hits for Payson. Bryant was 2 for 5 with three RBIs and a double, and Kunzeman was 3 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a double. Layne Gilmore went 1 for 2 for Payson with two RBIs, and Logan Sparks had a pair of doubles and a run scored.
