Payroll scam reported in Marion County

PALMYRA, Mo. -- A Marion County business reported Wednesday that it had received a fraudulent email requesting an employee's direct deposit paycheck be adjusted.

The Marion County Sheriff's Department said fictitious emails appear to be coming from the employee asking that the bank routing number be changed, but the routing numbers likely funnel money outside the United States.

This is the second report the Sheriff's Department has received recently, and it is working with the FBI to resolve these matters.

The Sheriff's Department urges area businesses to be cautious with payroll requests and to communicate with employees directly to verify the process. Anyone affected by a payroll scam is asked to reach out to law enforcement.
