QUINCY -- The Rev. E.L. Warren breaks into a smile when asked about the "Simplicity of Worship," his newest book that is now available to the public.
"Of all of the books I have written, this is the one I am most excited about," Warren said.
Warren, who has pastored the Cathedral of Worship, 215 N. 25th, since 1980, said his goal for the book is to provide a better understanding of worship.
"Worship is an attitude about God," Warren said. "Just singing a song ... is not worship. Singing accommodates worship. A lot of what we call worship is not. Worship with our mouth and lips -- and not our heart -- is not worship.
"When we're praising God with lethargic language, we're saying he is mighty, but we're not acting like he is mighty."
The "Simplicity of Worship" is Warren's eighth book since the early 1990s, with his 1996 effort "I'm Saved -- Now What?" currently in its fifth printing with sales of more than 20,000.
Warren said he expects the latest release to eventually surpass the 1996 book, judged by early sales. The "Simplicity of Worship" was released in mid-January and is Warren's first manuscript since 2016.
Warren said there is no part of a person's life that is not influenced by worship habits.
"You have to make a decision, either to worry or to worship -- you can't do both," Warren said. "When you pray, you take your problems to God. When you worship, you bring God to your problems."
Warren's book is available at the Cathedral of Worship and through the church website at cow-elw.com. It also is available through Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook and Apple Books. Cost is $12.99 in paperback and $7.99 in electronic form.
Warren said book signings are scheduled at churches in Memphis, Tenn., and Milwaukee, Wis., on Feb. 24 and April 6, respectively.
