PETERSBURG, Ill. -- The final two minutes weren't going to determine Elliott Fox's fate. He already had secured his berth in the Class 1A state wrestling tournament taking place next week in Champaign.
Those two minutes were the difference between walking into State Farm Center as a sectional champion or just another contender.
Fox escaped from the down position to start the third period against Auburn's Shane Trimingham and scored a takedown to cement a 6-3 victory in the 195-pound championship match Saturday at the Class 1A Petersburg PORTA Sectional.
Fox, a senior with a 34-11 record, was the area's only sectional champion and one of five wrestlers to earn state berths.
Two other area wrestlers were in title matches.
At 152, Central junior Clayton Boehler advanced with a 9-5 victory over LeRoy sophomore Ty Baxter in the semifinals. In the championship, Boehler (33-5) suffered a 9-2 loss to Deer Creak-Mackinaw's Wes Girardi.
At 220, Pittsfield's Nate Hoover reached the finals after pinning Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley's Garrett Wright in 4:41. Beardstown's Chad Grimm pinned Hoover (38-8) in 1:55 in the championship.
At 113, Central sophomore Zach Foote suffered an 11-4 loss in the semifinals to Illini Bluffs' Cameron Clark. Foote rebounded to pin El Paso-Gridley's Monte Gregory in 3:02 in the wrestleback semifinals.
He pinned LeRoy's Ethan Matlock in 2:12 in the third-place match to advance.
At 138, after losing his opening match, Central senior Chayse Houston won three straight matches in the wrestlebacks, pinning Tremont's Tanner Finin in 5:49 to reach the third-place match.
In the third-place match, Houston earned a 13-0 major decision over Beardstown's Lalo Munoz.
