Prep roundup: Eagles survive foul trouble to upend Hornets

A 23-point first quarter allowed the Liberty girls basketball team to build a double-digit lead and overcome late-game foul trouble to pick up a 65-52 victory over Brown County on Thursday night in Mount Sterling, Ill.

Taryn Roe went 5 for 7 from the free-throw line and scored 20 points for the Eagles, while Izzy Gimm went 6 for 6 at the line and added 14 points. The Eagles were 21 of 29 from the line overall.

The Hornets didn't capitalize on two Liberty players fouling out, going just 15 of 29 from the free-throw line. Ally Heldt led the Hornets with 16 points and Belle Koch had 15.

Clark County 64, Canton 39: Three players scored in double figures as the Indians picked up the victory in Kahoka, Mo. Alexis Ellison scored all of her 14 points in the second half for Clark County (6-1), while Aubry Boulware made three 3-pointers in the first quarter en route to a 12-point effort.

Lauren Frazier led the Tigers (0-4) with 16 points, while Laken Hugenburg had 15 points.

Highland 69, Unity 50: Four players scored in double figures as the Cougars stayed undefeated with the non-conference victory in Ewing, Mo.

After scoring just nine points in the first quarter, the Cougars (3-0) scored at least 18 points in each the final three quarters. Lauren Merrell scored all 12 of her points in the second quarter for Highland, while Kennedy Flanagan had 12 of her game-high 22 points in the second half. Kaitlin Benson and Addy Johnson each added 10 points.

Addison Miller led Unity (4-4) with 20 points, 11 of which came in the third quarter.

Central-Southeastern 51, Beardstown 20: A 25-point outburst in the third quarter allowed the Panthers to put away their fifth-straight victory. Laney Lantz scored a game-high 26 points for C-SE, hitting three 3-pointers in the third quarter. The Panthers (5-0) went 13 of 19 at the free-throw line.

Illini West 51, Abingdon-Avon 28: Kailee Artman scored 14 and Karli Artman had 12 as the Chargers picked up the victory in Abingdon. Illini West (6-2) went on a 20-2 run in the third quarter.

West Hancock 45, Western/Payson 29: Emma Knipe scored a team-high 16 points as the Titans (7-4) won in Kinderhook. The Titans (7-4) limited the Wildcats to two points in the second quarter while building a 22-9 halftime lead. Haley Flores scored 19 points for Western (1-8).

Paris 54, Palmyra 39: The Panthers trailed 23-16 at halftime before giving up 18 points in the third quarter to suffer the loss in the semifinals of the Monroe City Tournament. Megan Stone led Palmyra with nine points, and Isabella Goldinger added eight.

North Shelby 36, Marion County 35: Lalain Treasure scored 11 points as the Raiders won in the consolation bracket of the Monroe City Tournament. Halle Keilholz scored 16 points for the Mustangs.
