CARTHAGE, Ill. -- The Hancock County Sheriff's Department is investigating a stabbing that took place Monday near Pontoosuc.

A department news release said the stabbing occurred about 11 p.m. on 1530 East County Road about a quarter-mile south of the intersection of Ill. 9 and Ill. 96.

The release said two unidentified adult men, ages 34 and 43, got into an argument while inside a vehicle. Both were injured by a knife. Two other occupants of the vehicle were not injured.

The department said the 43-year-old man received a stab wound to the chest and was taken by private vehicle to Fort Madison, Iowa, where the Lee County Ambulance Service then took him to Fort Madison Community Hospital.

The 34-year-old man was treated Tuesday at Carthage Memorial Hospital.

The stabbing remains under investigation.
