QUINCY -- The Quincy Gems trailed by three runs with three innings left to try to start a rally.

There was just one problem -- the Gems couldn't get on base.

Kokomo Jackrabbits right-hander Josh Konecek breezed to a three-inning save by striking out seven of the first eight Gems he faced, allowed just one hit and finished with eight strikeouts to send Quincy to its fourth Prospect League loss in its last five games with an 8-5 setback Saturday night at QU Stadium.

"(Konecek) had a really good arm and mixed it well," Gems shortstop Kyle Crowl said. "He had a funky motion that kind of got us."

The Gems (5-5) were forced to rally after a sluggish three innings from their pitching staff.

Starter Cody Klotz lasted just 11/3 innings after allowing four runs on two hits while walking four and striking out two.

He gave up a towering three-run home run to Alex Dorethy just four batters into the game. Joshua Scheer threw 12/3 innings of relief behind Klotz, allowing three runs on three hits.

The Jackrabbits (4-5) led 7-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning.

"We're down from the get-go," Gems manager Rick Fraire said. "Cody just had an off day. He looked good in the bullpen, but guys aren't going to come out on the mound and go 10-0 on the year."

Right-hander Tyson Banks had the best success out of the bullpen, throwing three scoreless innings of relief and allowing just one hit while striking out one and walking one.

"I just wanted to keep it there and hope the team could come out and hit," Banks said. "That's really what pitchers do when we have to come in situations like that. As a pitching staff, it takes a lot of pressure off knowing there's offense on this team."

Quincy scraped together a pair of runs in the third when Ryan Knernschield drove in Max McGuire on a groundout, and Tyler Engel scored on a passed ball to cut Kokomo's lead to 7-2.

Kyle Crowl led off the fourth with a single up the middle, moved to second when Bryce Beauchamp was hit by a pitch and scored on McGuire's RBI single to right. Blake Adams, who entered the game hitting .172, hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Beauchamp, and McGuire also scored when the Kokomo left fielder booted the ball.

Quincy couldn't put together another rally as it stranded five in the final five innings.

"We kind of battled tonight," Crowl said. "We had guys out of the bullpen really battle for us tonight. We just couldn't put it together, and we missed some opportunities."
