Columbia man found guilty of second-degree murder in death of Monroe County man

FULTON, Mo. -- A Callaway County jury found a Columbia man guilty of second-degree murder Thursday after a four-day trial.

Jason L. Lage, 36, also was found guilty of armed criminal action and not guilty on tampering with physical evidence in the death of Zachary Dawson, 26, of Madison. Lage was accused of shooting Dawson during a robbery Feb. 19, 2014.

Lage originally faced a first-degree murder charge.

In a statement, Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Talley Kendrick said she was pleased with the trial's outcome.

"Zach Dawson's family has waited a long time for justice in this case," Kendrick said. "We are thankful to the jury for their service in this case."

Lage had been held in the Monroe County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond.

Also implicated in the shooting was Jessica Munoz, 32, of Moberly, who pleaded guilty in May 2016 to involuntary manslaughter and hindering prosecution, She was sentenced to seven years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
