The Quincy Gems fell behind in the bottom of the third inning and couldn't catch up in a 6-4 Prospect League loss to Springfield Saturday night at Springfield, Ill. The Gems tied the score at 2 in the top of the third when Greg Allen doubled home Zac Zdanowicz, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch. However, the Sliders regained a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the inning on Mike Fitzgerald's RBI double and Reagan Fowler's sacrifice fly. Springfield extended its lead to 6-2 in the fifth. In the top of the eighth, Matt Munoz singled home Michael Gunn. In the ninth, Jake Walsh scored from third on Allen's double-play groundout. Allen and Munoz had two hits apiece for Quincy. The Gems -- now 15-13 in the second half and 33-25 overall -- will play at Springfield again at 6:30 p.m. Sunday before playing the season finale at Hannibal at 6:35 p.m. Monday. Cavemen 14, Rex 6: Hannibal had six of their season-high 19 hits during a five-run first inning against the West Division second-half champion Rex at Terre Haute, Ind. The big hit of the first inning came when Taylor Kaufman hit a two-run double for a 4-0 lead with one out. Kaufman scored two batters later on Daniel Peters' double for a 5-0 lead. After scoring two runs in the second and another in the fourth, the Cavemen added four more runs in the sixth. Derek Fletcher hit a triple with the bases loaded, then scored on the play following an error by second baseman Jacob Hayes. Jake Manlger, Zach Nichols, Ian Sikes and Ryan Light all had three hits apiece for Hannibal -- now 14-14 in the second half and 30-28 overall. The Cavemen will wrap up their two-game series against Terre Haute at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. -- sports@whig.com/221-3365
