Hannibal High School graduate Zach Nichols hit a game-tying double in the sixth inning and finished 2 for 4 to help the Hannibal Cavemen beat the Springfield Sliders 5-2 on Friday at Clemens Field. Nichols upped his batting average to .389. Hannibal (4-5) trailed 2-0 entering the sixth inning. Jake Mangler cut the deficit in half with an RBI single to score Daniel Peters. Nichols then notched his double to chase home J. Golden, and Randy Villa hit an infield dribbler that brought home Mangler to give the Cavemen a lead they never surrendered, as they tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Dylan Terrell earned the win after allowing a pair of earned runs in six innings. He surrendered six hits, walked one and struck out five. Ryan Powers worked the final three innings for the save. Springfield (2-7) took a 2-0 lead in the second on Michael Hurwitz's two-out, two-run single. Gems 8, Dans 6: Quincy scored at least once in each of the first four innings to build a 7-0 lead after the top of the fourth, and Ricky Sandquist and Bronson Smith combined for three scoreless innings of relief to hold off the Dans' comeback attempt. Smith allowed a pair of one-out singles to put the tying runner on base before he got the final two outs for his third save, which is tied for the Prospect League lead. Andrew Grahn earned the win. He worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out one. Quincy (7-2) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning by scoring on a wild pitch and a double steal. The Gems broke the game open with a three-run fourth, during which Gregory Allen hit a two-run triple and later scored on a wild pitch. Danville (1-8) did must of its damage off of reliever Zac Pearman, who surrendered three earned runs and recorded just two outs. -- sports@whig.com/221-3365
