Criminals should be punished, not law-abiding gun owners

To The Herald-Whig:

Another gun letter, another opinion -- every opinion so far always leaves one opinion out: That being punish the criminal responsible. Everyone from the president on down talks about control, more laws, smaller clips, etc. I would like someone to state that the shooter will be punished to the full extent of the law. But, we can't do that -- they have rights. Honest people and especially victims don't seem to have the same rights.

Why don't the Democrats or Republicans preach punishment for the bad people? I'm a proud gun owner and my guns have never killed another human being. The shooter in Arizona now pleads guilty to avoid the death penalty. They said he was mentally unfit when he shot all those people. He was the smart one -- having fooled everyone until facing the death penalty. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall.

It shouldn't take years and millions of dollars to convict criminals when they are caught red-handed. It should only take a few weeks and should use the maximum punishment the law allows.

I guess most politicians won't touch this theory -- they might lose votes. But I know a few who feel this way. As far as kids being killed, as the letter stated in Sunday's paper, you can use a knife, car, rope, fertilizer and diesel fuel, ball bat, etc. These objects don't kill people -- people kill people! Let's deal with them quickly and fairly.
