Johnny Bang Bang's, 138 N. Front, has received approval from the Quincy City Council to build a two-story wood and masonry deck on the west side of the building, which is located on city right-of-way.

Aldermen voted 13-0 to approve an encroachment permit for Front Street Five Holdings LLC, owner of the restaurant and bar, at a brief City Council meeting Monday night. Alderman Virgil Goehl, D-1, was absent.

The council had to approve a resolution for the permit because it is a permanent encroachment on city right-of-way.

Chuck Bevelheimer, director of planning and management, said the permit says that if the city has to enter the right-of-way, it would not be responsible for any damage. If Johnny Bang Bang's removes the deck, the area has to be restored.

"It basically gives them the right to build a permanent structure," he said. "That was probably the biggest thing we had to grapple with. We also wanted to make sure it was consistent with our downtown zoning standards with materials."

In other business, the City Council heard that the city took in $763,917 from the sales tax in March, an increase of 6.4 percent from last year. From the home rule sales tax, the city received $781,202, an increase of 8.5 percent from last year.

The City Council also:

º Concurred with Mayor John Spring's appointment of Ron Dreyer to the Police Pension Board.

º Indefinitely tabled a proposal to rezone 407 S. 48th from rural to limited local commercial zoning, but sent a request to divide the property into two lots to the Plan Commission.

º Proclaimed June 18 "The War of 1812 Remembrance Day."
