Quincy Herald Whig http://qui.live.mediaspanonlinen.com/rss/ Quincy Herald Whig en-us Final Buck Night gives guests tour of John Wood Mansion at reduced admission The nationally historic Governor John Wood Mansion is the featured venue for the final Buck Night at the Museum, a series of reduced-price summertime tours of the major sites at the 12th and State campus of the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County. The mansion tour from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug, 17, will cost only $1, a discount of 75 percent from regular adult tour prices. Historical society members may tour anytime at no charge. "We've saved this tour for last," said the Historical Society's Joe Winkelmann, who came up with the idea for Buck Night at the Museum. "This was the most unusual home in Quincy when it was built 177 years ago. It must have seemed odd to most people in Quincy at the time who lived in one-room log cabins. This place was the first structure in the Midwest to be built in the Greek Revival style of architecture, and there was a groundbreaking reason for that. We'll tell that story during the tours." The Governor John Wood Mansion in 2007 was honored by the Association of Independent Architects as one of the 150 most important buildings in Illinois. It also is listed on the National Historical Register as a nationally historic site. http://qui.live.mediaspanonline.com/new_story/Buck-Night-08052012
