INDIANAPOLIS -- Remi Ferguson's sacrifice bunt in the top of the eighth inning scored Courtney Kernich from third base and the Quincy University softball team held on to beat 15th-ranked Indianapolis 7-6 in the first game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday.
The Greyhounds won the nightcap with a 9-8 victory in nine innings.
The go-ahead run in Game 1 followed a two-run seventh for the Hawks, who trailed 6-4. Morgan Heckman drew a bases-loaded walk to score Megan Sharpshair and Geri Westerhoff followed with a single to score Ferguson.
Quincy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third when Kay Bettendorf hit an RBI double and Kylie Powers followed with a two-run double three batters later.
However, the Greyhounds hit two home runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 4. Indianapolis scored two more runs on an error in the fifth.
Kernich and Powers had three hits apiece for the Quincy, which outhit the Greyhounds 13-7.
McKenzie Collier earned the victory while going the distance. She struck out five batters, walked one, scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs.
Game 2 was Indianapolis' turn for extra-inning heroics. Jessie Noone scored from third on Taylor Danielson's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The game winner capped off nine unanswered runs for the Greyhounds, who trailed 8-0 in the fourth. Indianpaolis scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth and three in the sixth.
Quincy took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with Heckman's two-run home run. The Hawks scored five more times in the third -- highlighted by Powers' two-run double and Dana Walsh's three-run home run.
Quincy's final run came in the fourth when Sharpshair's sacrifice fly scored Kernich.
The Hawks (15-23, 5-15) finished with five extra-base hits, while the Greyhounds had none. Ferguson went 4 for 5, while Sharpshair had three hits.
