LAGRANGE, Mo. — A LaGrange man wanted by police shot himself as police closed in on him Friday afternoon.

Lewis County Sheriff David Parrish said Austin D. Clark, 20, was a suspect in a string of vehicle break-ins and burglaries that have been reported in and around Canton, Mo., all month.

While on the way to Clark’s home, deputies saw him walking on Monroe Street between Fourth and Fifth streets shortly before 4 p.m. As the deputies made contact with him, they say Clark fled west on Monroe Street. After running about 30 feet, he pulled a handgun out of his waistband and shot himself, officers said.

Clark was taken to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., and The Herald-Whig’s news-gathering partners at WGEM reported that he is in stable condition.

Two handguns were found at the scene.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control and the LaGrange Police Department are assisting on the investigation.
