QUINCY -- A Camp Point man was found not guilty of criminal sexual assault after a two-day trial Thursday in Adams County Circuit Court. The jury took nearly three hours to acquit Michael E. Renner, 30, in the December 2015 sexual assault case.
He was arrested Oct. 16, 2017, after charges were filed.
Charging documents alleged the accuser was unable to give consent because she was asleep.
Renner's attorney, Casey Schnack, said she believed the jury found inconsistencies from witnesses presented by prosecutors, and that the forensic evidence presented by prosecutors was not so cut and dried.
"The statistical analysis that the forensic scientist reported in my opinion and what I argued were not as conclusive as the state wanted them to believe," Schnack said.
She said Renner had not wavered on his innocence since his arrest.
"He never considered taking a deal or pleading guilty because it was the convenient thing to do or maybe the safe thing to do," Schnack said.
Renner had been held in the Adams County Jail on a $75,000 bond until his release Thursday evening.
