MEMPHIS, Mo. -- The top-seeded Canton softball team wanted to avoid a repeat of last year when it faced second-seeded Scotland County for the Class 1 District 11 title on Monday night.
Canton was the top seed in last year's district but was upset in the semifinals by Scotland County 2-1.
"I wasn't here last year, but I know there were some nerves after how things ended last time," first-year Canton coach Jonathan Bastian said. "I felt like we came locked in and ready to play."
Canton scored in the first inning and added four runs in the third in a 6-2 victory over Scotland County.
Canton (17-5) will host the sectional game against Gallatin (10-14) on Wednesday.
Bastian thought that the run in the opening inning, which scored an RBI single by Laken Hugenberg, helped settle any nerves Canton may have had.
"Their pitcher (Ashley Creek) has been good all year, and she can shut you down if you let her," Bastian said. "Scoring early got us feeling pretty good."
Canton capitalized on a pair of errors, a wild pitch and a defensive indifference to score four more runs in the third and give starting pitcher Olivia Jarvis all the cushion she would need.
"Once we got a few more runs, I think everybody was feeling pretty good with (Jarvis) out there," Bastian said.
Jarvis finished with six strikeouts and allowed just four hits in seven innings.
Riley Marshall had an RBI single in the fifth to push Canton's lead to six runs. Creek hit a two-run home run in the sixth to put Scotland County on the board, then Kylee Stott's double and Kaitlyn McMinn's walk put a pair of runners on base with two outs in the seventh before Abby Blessing popped out to end the game.
Creek struck out three, allowed six hits and walked three in six innings.
