HANNIBAL, Mo. – Josie Zeiger tripled home the tying run in the bottom of the seventh Tuesday, then scored on a wild pitch to help the Hannibal softball team cap a four-run rally in a 7-6 victory over Highland.
Hannibal (7-7) was down 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth but began to rally when Kennedy Schmohe led off the sixth with single. After a walk to Olivia Pfeifer and an infield pop fly, Zeiger grounded into a fielder's choice to advance the runners to second and third. An infield error scored one run, and Tori Moore singled home another run. A third run was plated after another Highland error.
In the top of the seventh, Highland (8-5) expanded its lead to 6-3 after an RBI single from Kara Baker and a passed ball.
The Pirates started the seventh with single by Haley Bautch and a walk to Schmohe. Pfeifer singled to left to bring in pinch runner Sydney Hart. A ground out by Taylor Simms allowed the runners to move into scoring position at second and third.
Zeiger then delivered a triple to center field to tie the game with one out. A 1-0 pitch got away from the catcher on the next at-bat, and Zeiger scampered home to end the game.
It was the second straight walk-off loss for Highland, which lost to Canton Monday night.
Hannibal had only six hits but took advantage of five Highland errors. Taylor Wilson got the win for the Pirates, allowing nine hits and striking out one.
Becca Scott had three hits for Highland, with Baker and Kennedy Flanagan each adding two.
