COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Hannibal-LaGrange University softball team swept an American Midwest Conference doubleheader from Stephens College on Thursday, winning 4-2 and 7-3.
In the opener, the Trojans used a three-run outburst in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. Shelby Miller's RBI triple and RBI singles from Jenna Duckworth and Jordyn Alford gave HLGU the lead.
Stephens scored on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh and had runners on first and second before Madison Ingram got a fly ball to end the game. Ingram went the distance for the Trojans, striking out five.
In the second game, HLGU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single from Alford. The Trojans (21-19, 13-9 AMC) added two more in the third inning thanks to a two-run home run by Duckworth. Stephens responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to make the game 4-3. After a scoreless fourth, the Trojans sealed the win with a three-run fifth.
Alford picked up the victory, giving up three hits with three strikeouts over the first four innings. Haley Zeier finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs for HLGU.
