Chargers blast way to strong start against Blue Devils

CARTHAGE, Ill. -- Two home runs in the first inning set the tone for the Illini West softball team's 7-2 victory over Quincy High School on Thursday.

Daytona Dooley led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run, and the Chargers went up 3-0 when Hannah Wood jacked a two-run homer.

A two-run home run by the Blue Devils' Roni Wingerter in the top of the sixth inning made it 3-2, but the Chargers escaped with no further damage by stranding runners at first and second base.

In the bottom of the inning, Ali Bliss and Wood had RBI singles and Hanna Spiekermeier added an RBI double as Illini West (16-3-1) scored four time. Bayley Clampitt's sacrifice fly finished the scoring.

Hannah Wood had a home run and three RBIs as the lllini West softball team beat Quincy High School 7-2 on Thursday.

Lara Pence struck out the side in the top of the seventh in relief of Blair Boston, who allowed six hits and struck out six over six innings.
