QUINCY -- Southern Indiana scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning Saturday to beat the Quincy University baseball team for the second straight day with a 5-4 victory at QU Stadium.
Southern Indiana (6-8) led 3-0 until QU senior Jake Walters lined a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left for his 10th homer of the season in the fourth inning. Walters entered the weekend ranked second in NCAA Division II in homers per game. Senior Jack Klages had an RBI single later in the inning to tie the game.
The Hawks (9-8) trailed 4-3 in the seventh when QU senior David Hayes belted an opposite field homer to right to tie the game again.
Southern Indiana scored the go-ahead run on a flare to right by Angel Torres in the eighth inning. Tyler Hagedorn and Justin Watts each tossed a perfect inning of relief to close the non-conference victory for the Screaming Eagles.
Kyle Griffin (1-3) earned the victory, giving up four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out nine. QU starter Mark Niebrugge did not figure in the decision, tossing 4 1/3 innings and giving up four runs on seven hits. Senior Graham Spraker (1-2) took the loss, surrendering one run in 3 2/3 innings. Junior Cole Crawford threw a scoreless ninth inning.
Hayes led the Hawks with two hits. Walters and Brynn Martinez each reached base twice.
The Hawks and Screaming Eagles will finish their weekend series on Sunday at noon at QU Stadium.
